FEMUSINDO.com - Virgiawan Liestanto or better known by his stage name Iwan Fals is a legendary singer, musician, songwriter, and critic in Indonesia through his song lyrics.

His musical style has been said to be pop, rock, country, and folk pop and his song lyrics often tell of the dark times of the 1970s to 1980s.

Iwan Fals is included in the list of The Immortals: 25 Greatest Indonesian Artists of All Time by Rolling Stone Indonesia magazine.

From Busker, Joining Festivals to Recording

Iwan Fals, whose real name is Virgiawan Liestanto, was born in Jakarta, September 3, 1961, to Colonel Anumerta Sucipto (the late) from Purwokerto who was the son of a high-ranking sugar factory official in Kalibagor, Banyumas, Central Java, and his mother, Lies Suudijah from Tasikmalaya.

Iwan Fals spent his childhood in Bandung, then in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, for 8 months. His musical talent was further honed at the age of 13, when Iwan spent most of his time busking in Bandung.

Trying his luck in Jakarta, Iwan recorded his first album with his friends, Toto Gunarto, Helmi Bahfen, and Bambang Bule who were members of Amburadul. Unfortunately, this album failed in the market and Iwan returned to his profession as a busker.

After winning a country music festival, Iwan joined a humor song festival. Arwah Setiawan (deceased), Iwan's humorous songs were recorded with Pepeng, Krisna, and Nana Krip and produced by ABC Records, but also failed and were only consumed by certain groups.

Iwan Fals' Songs Are in Great Demand

Until finally, Iwan's journey collaborated with Musica Studio. Before going to Musica, Iwan had recorded around 4-5 albums. At Musica, Iwan's songs were then worked on more seriously. The Sarjana Muda album, for example, was handled by Willy Soemantri.

The Sarjana Muda album turned out to be in great demand and Iwan began to receive various offers to sing. He then entered television after 1987. When the Mana Suka Siaran Niaga program was broadcast on TVRI, the song Oemar Bakri was aired.

Because the lyrics of his songs were considered to be able to provoke riots, during the New Order many of Iwan's concert schedules were banned and canceled.

In April 1984, Iwan Fals had to deal with security forces and was detained and interrogated for 2 weeks for singing the lyrics of the songs Demokrasi Nasi and Pola Sederhana also Mbak Tini at a concert in Pekanbaru.

Making Hit Songs

When he joined the SWAMI group and released an album titled SWAMI in 1989, Iwan's name skyrocketed by making the phenomenal hits Bento and Bongkar.

Iwan Fals' career journey continued to climb when he joined Kantata Takwa in 1990 which was fully supported by businessman Setiawan Djodi.

Through his songs, Iwan Fals 'saw' the social atmosphere of Indonesian life in the late 1970s until now, world life in general, and life itself.

Criticism of the behavior of a group of people (such as Surat Untuk Wakil Rakyat, Tante Lisa), empathy for marginalized groups (for example Siang Seberang Istana, Lonteku).

Or, major disasters that hit Indonesia (sometimes outside Indonesia, such as Ethiopia) dominate the themes of the songs he performs. However, Iwan Fals does not only sing his own songs but also a number of other creators. (*)
