She is an American singer-songwriter known for her heartfelt ballads, especially from the peak of the quiet storm period in the 1980s.
Starting her career in the late 1970s with the funk band Chapter 8, Baker released her first solo album, The Songstress, in 1983.
In 1986, she rose to fame after releasing her second Platinum-selling album, Rapture, which included the Grammy-winning single "Sweet Love".
Received Many Awards
As of 2017, Baker has won eight Grammy Awards and has four Platinum albums, along with two Gold albums.
Baker is a contralto singer with a wide octave range. Her music genres are soul, jazz, quiet storm, smooth, jazzsoul and R&B.
She began her active career as a singer between 1979–2013 and 2018–present under the labels Ariola, Beverly Glen, Elektra, Atlantic and Blue Note. (*)
