FEMUSINDO.com - Charles Edward Anderson Berry, with his famous name Chuck Berry, was born in St. Louis, Missouri, United States, on October 18, 1926.

He is a legendary American singer, guitarist, and songwriter who pioneered rock and roll and is nicknamed the "Father of Rock and Roll".

He perfected and developed rhythm and blues into the main elements that make rock and roll distinctive.

His hit songs include "Maybellene" (1955), "Roll Over Beethoven" (1956), "Rock and Roll Music" (1957), and "Johnny B. Goode" (1958).

Singing and Songwriting

Writing lyrics that focused on teenage life and consumerism, and developing a musical style that included guitar solos and showmanship, Berry was a major influence on subsequent rock music.

Born into a middle-class black family in St. Louis, Berry had an interest in music from an early age and gave his first public performance at Sumner High School.

By the late 1950s, Berry was an established star, with several hit records and film appearances as well as a lucrative touring career.

In 1972, he reached a new level of achievement when his rendition of "My Ding-a-Ling" became his only chart-topping recording.

First Musician in Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

Berry was one of the first musicians inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame when it opened in 1986.

He has been credited with "laying the foundation not only for the sound of rock and roll but also for the attitude of rock and roll.

Berry, dubbed the "Father of Rock N' Roll," has been included on several of Rolling Stone magazine's "greatest of all time" lists.

Greatest Artists of All Time

He was ranked fifth on the 2004 and 2011 lists of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time and the 2nd greatest guitarist of all time in 2023.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll includes three of Berry's songs: "Johnny B. Goode," "Maybellene," and "Rock and Roll Music."

His song "Johnny B. Goode" is the only rock-and-roll song included on the Voyager Golden Record.

Berry died near Wentzville, Missouri, U.S., March 18, 2017 at the age of 90 and was buried at Bellerive Gardens Cemetery, St. Louis. (*)
