Johnny Cash: Man in Black, Former Air Force Becomes Singer-Songwriter

He is an American singer-songwriter known for his deep and calm voice, supported by the distinctive sound of his backing band.

Most of Cash's music contains themes of sadness, moral misery, and redemption, especially songs from the later stages of his career.

Nicknamed "Man in Black"

Cash (his nickname), with his famous name Johnny Cash, wore his signature all-black stage outfit, which earned him the nickname "Man in Black".

Born to cotton farmers in Kingsland, Arkansas, Cash grew up listening to gospel music and playing on local radio stations in high school.

After graduating from high school, Johnny Cash enlisted in the United States Air Force in July 1950 and was assigned to Germany as a Morse code operator.

He served four years in the Air Force, mostly in West Germany. He was honorably discharged from the Air Force in 1954.

After returning to the United States, he rose to prominence in the mid-1950s in the burgeoning rockabilly scene in Memphis, Tennessee.

Starting Concerts with an Introductory Introduction

He typically began his concerts by introducing himself with "Hello, I'm Johnny Cash". He would later follow it with "Folsom Prison Blues", one of his signature songs.

During the later stages of his career, he covered songs by contemporary rock artists, among his most famous covers being "Hurt" by Nine Inch Nails, "Rusty Cage" by Soundgarden, and "Personal Jesus" by Depeche Mode.

Cash is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, having sold over 90 million records worldwide.

His music spans a wide range of genres including country, rock and roll, rockabilly, blues, folk, and gospel.

His immense appeal earned him the rare honor of being inducted into the Country Music, Rock and Roll, and Gospel Music Halls of Fame.

Johnny Cash, who began singing from 1954–2003, died in Nashville, Tennessee, United States, on September 12, 2003 at the age of 71.

To commemorate him, Johnny Cash's life was made into a feature film and immortalized in the 2005 film Walk The Line. (*)
