Lady Gaga is a singer, songwriter, and actress known for her unconventional and provocative work, as well as her visual experiments.
Gaga began performing as a teenager, singing in clubs and acting in school shows. She studied at Collaborative Arts Project 21, through New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, before dropping out to pursue a music career.
Getting Known
She began to be known with her debut album, the electropop-tinged record The Fame, and number-one singles, such as "Just Dance" and "Poker Face".
Then, The Fame Monster (2009), producing singles such as "Bad Romance", "Telephone", and "Alejandro", also achieved success.
Gaga's second full-length album Born This Way (2011) explored electronic rock and techno-pop. It topped the US Billboard 200 and sold over one million copies in the country in its first week.
Fastest-Selling Song
The album's title track became the fastest-selling song on the iTunes Store with over a million downloads in less than a week.
Gaga incorporated EDM into her third studio album Artpop (2013), which peaked at number one in the US and spawned the single "Applause".
Her collaborative jazz album with Tony Bennett, Cheek to Cheek, and her soft rock-inspired fifth studio album Joanne (2016), also topped the US album charts.
Acting
During this period, Gaga also ventured into acting, playing the lead role in the miniseries American Horror Story: Hotel (2015–2016), which won her a Golden Globe Award, and the musical romantic drama film A Star Is Born (2018).
She also contributed to the film's soundtrack, making her the only woman to have five US number-one albums in the 2010s.
The film's lead single, "Shallow", topped the charts in seven countries and has been nominated for several awards.
Best-Selling Music Artist
Having sold 27 million albums and 146 million singles as of January 2016, Gaga is one of the best-selling music artists in history.
Her accolades include several Guinness World Records, six Grammys, three Brit Awards, and honors from the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Council of Fashion Designers of America.
Gaga has been named Artist of the Year by Billboard and has been included in Forbes' power and earnings lists.
In 2012, she ranked fourth on VH1's list of the Greatest Women in Music, was ranked second in Time's 2011 readers' pick of the most influential people of the past 10, and in 2015 was named Billboard's Woman of the Year. (*)
