FEMUSINDO.com - Sasando is a traditional musical instrument from the Rote culture in the Province of East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), Indonesia, which is played by plucking it with the fingers.

The name Sasando according to its origin in the Rote language, Sasandu, which means an instrument that vibrates or makes a sound.

It is said that Sasando has been used among the Rote people since the 7th century. However, some say that this musical instrument is estimated to have existed since the 17th century.

There are 2 versions of the origin of Sasando in folklore. The first version, initially Sasando was discovered by a young man named Sangguana, who was stranded on Ndana Island.

One night Sangguana dreamed that he was playing a musical instrument that was beautiful in shape and sound. Then Sangguana succeeded in creating this musical instrument named Sandu (meaning the one who dares to vibrate).

The second version of the origin of Sasando begins with the story of two friends, namely Lunggi Lain and Balok Ama Sina. These two friends work as shepherds and palm wine tappers.

The idea to create the Sasando musical instrument was when they were making a haik (a container for holding palm wine) made of palm leaves.

Between the fingers of the palm leaves there is a kind of thread (in Rote fifik). Unintentionally the fifik or thread is tightened and then plucked to produce a different sound.

The Sasando musical instrument is simple in shape. The main part is in the form of a long tube made of bamboo, the middle part is circular from top to bottom.

The circle is given a support (in Rote: senda), where the strings or strings stretched in the bamboo tube from top to bottom rest.

This support gives different tones to each pluck of the string, then the Sasando tube is given a container made of woven palm leaves (haik).

This container is where the Sasando resonates. At first glance, this container looks like a curved water container.

Sasando itself is used as a means of therapy for sadness and joy. This musical instrument is often used by the community to accompany the singing of poetry, traditional dances and to entertain families who are grieving.

Along with its development, currently there are several types of Sasando, namely Sasando Gong, Sasando Violin and Sasando Electric.

As an intangible cultural heritage native to Indonesia, Sasando has been proposed as a World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization).

This musical instrument has traveled the world to the United States, Russia, England, the Netherlands, Italy, Finland, Germany and Taiwan which was brought by Djitron Pah from Indonesia in the Asia's Got Talent event in 2015. (*)
