Fritz Pfleumer Inventor of Magnetic Tape for Recording Sound

FEMUSINDO.com - Fritz Pfleumer was a German engineer who invented magnetic tape for recording sound, the forerunner of the tape recorder.

Fritz was born in Salzburg, Austria-Hungary, March 20, 1881 and died in Radebeul, Germany, August 29, 1945, at the age of 64.

Fritz Pfleumer made the first magnetic tape device in 1928 and sold the rights to use his magnetic tape to AEG in 1932.

AEG is a manufacturer of electrical equipment. Allgemeine Elektricitäts-Gesellschaft AG (German for General Electric Company).

Invention of Magnetic Tape

At that time, sound recording technology was still relatively primitive. The most commonly used technology was steel wire, which had many shortcomings, such as being easily broken and having low sound quality.

Pfleumer was inspired by the research of Valdemar Poulsen, a Danish engineer who had developed the telegraphone, a sound recording device that used steel wire.

Pfleumer wanted to develop a better technology than the telegraphone. So he experimented.

Pfleumer developed a process for attaching metal stripes to cigarette paper and reasoned that he could coat the magnetic stripes in the same way to use as an alternative to wire recording.

In 1927, after experimenting with various materials, Pfleumer used very thin paper coated with iron oxide powder using varnish as an adhesive. He received a patent in 1928.

On December 1, 1932, Pfleumer granted AEG the right to use his invention when building the world's first practical tape recorder, called the Magnetophon K1.

Magnetophon is a brand or model name of a pioneering reel-to-reel tape recorder developed by engineers at the German electronics company AEG in the 1930s, based on Fritz Pfleumer's invention of magnetic tape.

This magnetic tape was first demonstrated at the IFA (Internationale Funkausstellung Berlin) or Berlin International Radio Exhibition or Berlin Radio Show in 1935.
