Jimmy Barnes Most Popular and Best-Selling Australian Rock Music Artist of All Time

FEMUSINDO.com - James Dixon Barnes, better known as Jimmy Barnes, is a Scottish-born Australian rock singer.

Barnes launched his solo career less than a month after Cold Chisel's Last Stand tour ended in December 1983.

He put together a band that included Arnott, former Fraternity bassist Bruce Howe and guitarists Mal Eastick (ex-Stars) and Chris Stockley (ex-The Dingoes), then toured and wrote for a solo album.

Signed to Mushroom Records, Barnes released his first single, "No Second Prize", in August 1984, which peaked at number 12 on the Australian charts.

Solo Album Releases

His first solo album, Bodyswerve, was released in September 1984 and debuted at number one on the Australian charts.

In October 2000, Barnes performed at the closing ceremony of the Sydney Olympics, the 2000 Summer Olympics, officially known as the XXVII Olympiad.

In November 2000, Barnes released his second album of soul songs, Soul Deeper... Songs From the Deep South.

The album peaked at number 3 on the ARIA charts. A number of live albums followed with little commercial success.

Inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame

On 23 October 2005, Jimmy Barnes was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame for his solo efforts.

His career, both as a solo artist and as lead vocalist for the rock band Cold Chisel, has made him one of the most popular and best-selling Australian music artists of all time.

Barnes, who was born in Glasgow, Scotland, England, on 28 April 1956, has achieved 15 number-one solo albums in Australia, more than any other artist.

In addition, Barnes achieved five more albums as the lead singer of Cold Chisel, bringing his total number one albums in Australia to 20, surpassing The Beatles (with 14), Madonna and Taylor Swift (12), Eminem and U2 (11).

Received Several Awards

In 2017, Barnes was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia for his outstanding services to the performing arts as a musician, singer and songwriter.

The appointment was due to his support for non-profit organizations, especially for children with disabilities.

Throughout his career, Barnes has received several awards, such as the AIR Awards, Australasian Performing Right Association (APRA) and Australian Recording Industry Association Music Awards (ARIA).

Later, he also received the Country Music Awards of Australia (CMAA), Helpmann Awards, Rolling Stone Australia and others. (*)
