FEMUSINDO - Guns N' Roses (GNR) is a hard rock band from the United States that was founded in 1984 and inaugurated in March 1985.
The members and founders of the Guns N Roses band are Axl Rose who is the former vocalist of Hollywood Rose and Tracii Guns who is also the former guitarist of L.A. Guns.
The group that was founded in Los Angeles, United States, has had several personnel changes and even the guitarist and founder of GNR, Tracii Guns, left the group.
In 1983, after failing to join Poison with his childhood friend, Steven Adler, they formed Road Crew together. Slash placed an advertisement in a newspaper for a bassist and after that Slash received an answer from Duff McKagan.
When Road Crew disbanded, Slash joined a local band, Black Sheep. Led by Willie Bass, the band then shared an agent with another band, known as Hollywood Rose.
In 1984, the two bands opened for a Christian Metal band called Stryper. After the show, Slash and Axl Rose were introduced to each other by a mutual friend.
The two quickly became friends and after a few months, Slash and Steven Adler were invited to join Axl Rose, Duff McKagan and Izzy Stradlin as members of the band Guns N' Roses.
Famous in the 80s and 90s
The band was very famous in the 80s and 90s. They were first known for the album Appetite for Destruction (1987) with the hits Sweet Child O'Mine, Paradise City, and Welcome To The Jungle .
GNR then released an acoustic album called G N' R Lies with the sweet hit Patience . In 1991, GNR released the double album Use Your Illusion I and Use Your Illusion II which were successful with several phenomenal hits such as Don't Cry, November Rain, Civil War, Knockin' on Heaven's Door, You Could Be Mine and Estranged.
GNR was at the peak of their glory with the formation of Axl Rose (lead vocals), Slash (lead guitar), Izzy Stradlin (rhythm guitar), Duff McKagan (bass), Dizzy Reed (keyboard) and Matt Sorum (drums).
Guns N' Roses became the biggest rock band in the world in 1991-1992 when their double album "Use Your Illusion" exploded in the market.
With its legendary formation consisting of Axl Rose (lead vocals), Slash (lead guitar), Izzy Stradlin (rhythm guitar), Duff McKagan (bass), Dizzy Reed (keyboard) and Matt Sorum (drums). On September 17, 1991 at midnight, GNR became the greatest band in the world.
Hundreds of stores were open until morning to sell the first album Appetite for Destruction and the third album Use Your Illusion which consisted of 2 albums (Use Your Illusion I & Use Your Illusion II).
For the first time in history, both Use Your Illusion albums were ranked first and second best-selling albums by Billboard in the United States.
However, the greatness and success of GNR at that time did not immediately make their personnel more solid. What happened was when guitarist Izzy Stradlin quit GNR in the middle of the Use Your Illusion album world tour (Use Your Illusion World Tours).
Izzy was replaced by Gilby Clarke in the middle of the "Use Your Illusion World Tour" world tour. It can also be seen in the video clip "Don't Cry", in the clip there is a picture when Dizzy Reed (GNR keyboardist) sticks a writing on his back "Where's Izzy?".
In the video clip "Live and Let Die", there is a poster with a picture of Izzy Stradlin and the words "Missing!!". Another incident occurred when approaching the GNR concert in Tokyo, Japan. There was a poster that said "Who's Gilby?". This proves that GNR fans really miss Izzy.
GNR's Glory
The Spaghetti Incident (1993) album was a sign of the end of GNR's glory. The album, which contained recycled songs from other artists, could not make a profit like previous albums.
GNR's fate changed in 1994. They fought with each other, often entered drug addiction rehabilitation centers, and the album The Spaghetti Incident? failed in the market. Their rift began here.
After that, they had gathered in a studio in Los Angeles to record a new album which was planned to be released in 1995. However, not long afterward they were struck by a disease that was commonly suffered by other bands, namely boredom. They were too rich so they thought they didn't need to do anything.
In 1994, GNR officially fired Gilby Clarke who had previously participated and contributed to the album The Spaghetti Incident? and the Use Your Illusion world tour. Gilby's position was then replaced by Paul Tobias.
Axl Rose appointed himself as the leader of the album project, but he clearly could not lead. It so happened that Geffen Records also spoiled GNR.
Thanks to the album sales that brought in extraordinary profits, they gave GNR special freedom to write and record. At that time GNR had time to release the single "Sympathy for the Devil" which was the soundtrack for the film Interview With the Vampire.
In 1996, Slash chose to leave GNR. A year later, it was Matt Sorum and Duff Mckagan's turn to follow Slash's departure from GNR. Because the album planning was not finished, the GNR personnel left.
In addition, there were differences in vision, mission and music genre. The difference in genre was what caused Axl and Slash to separate. Slash, who wanted Guns N' Roses to continue playing hard rock music, had a different opinion from Axl, who wanted the genre for Guns N' Roses' new album to be industrial and techno rock.
In addition to differences in opinion and music genre, Slash finally got angry with Axl because Axl instead included Paul Tobias as guitarist to replace Gilby Clarke and Paul included his guitar solo for the song "Sympathy for the Devil".
From there, Slash firmly separated from Axl and of course Guns N' Roses. Before leaving Guns N' Roses, Slash had formed Slash's Snakepit with Gilby Clarke and Matt Sorum, fellow former GNR personnel.
A few years later, Slash reunited with fellow former GNR personnel, namely Duff McKagan, Matt Sorum and Izzy Stardlin in a band called The Project. However, the name of this band was later changed to Velvet Revolver.
Izzy Stardlin chose to leave because he had a bad experience and trauma due to his past towards the band and the vocalist. Izzy's position was then replaced by Dave Kushner and the vocalist position was filled by Scott Weiland (former vocalist of Stone Temple Pilots).
Building a New GNR Band
From the original personnel of GNR (The Original Guns), Axl Rose was left alone. Axl Rose maintained the GNR brand and recruited new personnel, an action that Geffen Records could not prevent. Even Geffen Records still believed that GNR with this new face would still be in demand by fans.
After the departure of the old personnel, Axl tried to rebuild the GNR band. From here GNR began to lose its distinctive characteristics, this was due to input from new members and something that Axl wanted to try, namely the techno rock element.
Actually, the song sample had appeared on the Use Your Illusion II album, namely "My World". In 1999, Guns N' Roses released the single "Oh My God" which was the soundtrack of the film End of Days with the help of Dave Navarro (former guitarist of Jane's Addiction & Red Hot Chili Peppers) and Gary Sunshine (Axl Rose's personal guitar teacher).
In 2001, GNR officially announced their new formation. The new formation of Guns N' Roses (New GNR) consists of Axl Rose (lead vocals), Buckethead (lead guitar), Robin Finck (lead guitar), Paul Tobias (rhythm guitar), Tommy Stinson (bass), Bryan Mantia (drums), Dizzy Reed (keyboard) and Chris Pitman (synthesizer).
With its latest formation, GNR had appeared in a concert in Las Vegas and the music festival "Rock In Rio III" (2001) in Rio De Janiero, Brazil. Guns N Roses played some old songs from their first album Appetite for Destruction to new songs from their latest album Chinese Democracy.
In August 2002, Guns N' Roses also performed by giving a surprising performance to the public at the 2002 MTV Video Music Awards. GNR performed 3 songs in a "medley" namely "Welcome To The Jungle", "Madagascar" and "Paradise City".
Throughout 2001-2002, GNR diligently held concerts and tours to promote the album Chinese Democracy even though the album had not been released. In 2004, Guns N' Roses decided to take a break for the umpteenth time and canceled their appearance at the "Rock In Rio IV" music festival (2004) in Lisbon, Portugal.
This made Guns N' Roses' position at the music festival have to be willing to be replaced by Foo Fighters, a rock band formed by Dave Grohl (former drummer for Nirvana). In the same year, Buckethead chose to leave Guns N' Roses.
GNR Personnel Changes
Personnel changes occurred again in Guns N' Roses. In 2002, Paul Tobias chose to leave GNR due to frustration over the delayed release of the album "Chinese Democracy". Not long after, Paul's position was then filled by Richard Fortus.
The lead guitar and drummer positions also changed. Buckethead and Robin Finck were then replaced by Bumblefoot (Ron Thal) and DJ Ashba. The drummer position was also filled by Josh Freese (former drummer for Nine Inch Nails) in 1997.
After Josh Freese left in 2000, the drummer position was then filled by Bryan Mantia. In 2006, Bryan Mantia chose to leave GNR and was replaced by Frank Ferrer.
Various speculations arose about the latest album and Axl also promised several times and even determined the release date. From year to year the story is always the same and fans began to look disappointed because the release of the Chinese Democracy album continued to be postponed. However, Axl and his GNR actually released the album in 2008.
From here there were pros and cons, some praised some viewed the album negatively. However, GNR continued and would continue its story in the next songs and tours.
In 2008, Robin Finck decided to leave Guns N' Roses for the umpteenth time after the release of the album Chinese Democracy. Ahead of the tour and concert that would be held in mid-2008, the band Guns N' Roses felt panicked.
The reason was, without any clear reason, their guitarist Robin Finck left. As reported on the band's official website, reportedly, Robin rejoined his previous band Nine Inch Nails to hold a tour next summer. As a result of Robin's departure, Guns N' Roses vocalist, Axl Rose felt upset.
"When Robin left everything went haywire. Not only were we confused, our fans were also confused and they felt a bit upset," said Axl on his official website.
This is not the first time Robin has done this. He has often been in and out of Guns N' Roses and Nine Inch Nails. Like in 2000, he left Guns N' Roses to join Nine Inch Nails, and toured several countries.
After the concert tour ended in 2001, he rejoined Guns N' Roses. To then undergo a series of tours with Guns N' Roses in several countries in Asia and Europe. (*)
