Nirvana, The Legendary Grunge Music of The World



FEMUSINDO.com - Nirvana is the name of a band from Aberdeen, Washington, United States, but they found success in Seattle, United States, which is famous for its grunge music genre, also known as Seattle Sound.

Nirvana began to be popular and known to the world since the release of their album entitled Nevermind, with the single they championed, namely Smells Like Teen Spirit.

This single earned them the trophy for The Best Alternative/Rock Band and had topped the charts on the American Billboard.

Nirvana Personnel

Nirvana consists of Krist Novoselic, Kurt Cobain, and Dave Grohl. The band disbanded after Kurt Cobain committed suicide due to an overdose after smoking cocaine at his residence in 1994.

The group was formed in Washington, United States, in 1987. All Nirvana songs were released by vocalist/guitarist Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic who filled the bass, Dave Grohl the drummer, the group released their first album in 1989 under an indie label.


In 1991, Nirvana signed a contract with the major label DGC and released their second album Nevermind. DGC estimated that they could sell at least 250 thousand copies of the album.

However, the opposite happened. The success of Smells Like Teen Spirit boosted sales to 400 thousand copies in just 1 week.

The End of Nirvana's Popularity

Trying to repeat the success of the first album, the third album titled In Utero was released 2 years later. Unfortunately, the popularity of this 3rd album was not as brilliant as the first.

On April 8, 1994 the end of Nirvana's history when the motor Kurt Cobain was found dead at his home in Seattle Washington. Some of their compilation albums were still released a few years later.

It is estimated that Nirvana has sold at least 50 million copies of their albums worldwide. Until now, no one has beaten its popularity as a legend of grunge music or better known as the Seattle sound. (*)
