Mbalax is a genre that has sacred origins in the Serer njuup musical tradition and the ndut initiation ceremony.
Subject of Award-Winning Films
He was the subject of the award-winning film Return to Gorée (2007) directed by Pierre-Yves Borgeaud and Youssou N'Dour.
Later, the subject of the film I Bring What I Love (2008) directed by Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi, which was released worldwide. In 2006, N'Dour starred as Olaudah Equiano in the film Amazing Grace.
N'Dour was nominated as a Goodwill Ambassador by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) on October 16, 2000.
Becoming an Influential Cultural Icon
In Senegal, N'Dour became an influential cultural icon, actively involved in social issues. In 1985, he organized a concert for the release of Nelson Mandela.
He headlined Amnesty International's 1988 worldwide Human Rights Tour and was featured on Amnesty International's charity album The Secret Policeman's Third Ball.
He has worked with the United Nations and UNICEF, and he started the Joko Project to open internet cafes in Africa and connect Senegalese communities around the world.
From April 2012 to September 2013, Youssou N'Dour served as Senegal's Minister of Tourism. (*)
