FEMUSINDO.com - Francis Albert Sinatra, with his famous name Frank Sinatra, was born in Hoboken, New Jersey, United States (US), on December 12, 1915.
He was a singer and actor who won an Oscar for several films he starred in, both receiving the best actor award and supporting actor.
Starting his music career in the Swing music era with Harry James and Tommy Dorsey, Sinatra became a successful solo singer in the 1940s.
Teenage Idol
During his time, Sinatra, who had other names such as Ol' Blue Eyes, The Chairman of the Board, The Voice and Frankie, was an idol for teenagers at that time who called themselves "bobby soxers".
His professional career seemed to stall in the early 1950s, but immediately exploded again after he won the Oscar for best supporting actor in the film "From Here to Eternity".
Sinatra was then signed to Capitol Records and released several critically acclaimed albums, including In the Wee Small Hours, Songs For Swingin' Lovers, Come Fly With Me, Only the Lonely and Nice 'n' Easy.
Own Recording Company
He left Capitol Records to start his own label, Reprise Records (with successful albums such as Ring-A-Ding-Ding, Sinatra at the Sands and Francis Albert Sinatra & Antonio Carlos Jobim), and toured internationally.
When Sinatra turned fifty in 1965, he recorded a retrospective album called September of My Years and won the Grammy Award for Best Album Of The Year.
His songs "Strangers in the Night" and "My Way" exploded onto the scene in the 1960s. He struggled to survive the changing tastes in pop music.
Retirement from the Art World
However, with the decline in sales of his albums, after being involved in several films that failed in the market and the mid-life crisis he experienced, he decided to retire from his art world in 1971.
Coming out of retirement in 1973, Sinatra returned to record several albums. One of his hit songs was "(Theme From) New York, New York".
He returned to touring singing his songs, both in the United States and in other countries until several years before he died in 1998.
Sinatra had three children Nancy, Frank Jr. and Tina from his first wife Nancy Barbato. He married three more times, namely to actresses Ava Gardner and Mia Farrow, and finally to Barbara Marx until his death on May 14, 1998. (*)
