Lata with the birth name Hema Mangeshkar is a legendary Indian singer who has had a career in the Bollywood film industry for more than six and a half decades.
She started her career as a singer in 1942, and has sung for more than 980 Bollywood film titles.
Although most of the songs she sings are in Hindi, Lata can sing in 20 regional languages in India.
Singing Siblings
Lata is the eldest of 5 siblings who are all singers. Asha Bhosle is one of her siblings who is successful as a singer.
In addition, her younger brother Hridayanath Mangeshkar and two sisters Usha Mangeshkar-Meena Mangeshkar are also singers.
In March 2001, Lata Mangeshkar received the Bharat Ratna Award, India's highest civilian award.
Singer with the Most Recordings in the World
The Guinness Book of World Records listed her name from 1974 to 1991 as the singer with the most recordings in the world.
Lata Mangeshkar is claimed to have recorded more than 25,000 songs performed solo or duet in 20 languages in India between 1948 and 1974.
Her songs were recorded, as many as 30,000 song titles between 1948 and 1987, according to the 1987 edition of the Guinness Book.
Has Made an Album in Indonesia
Although several sources support the total number of songs she has performed, several sources claim Asha Bhosle, her sister, as the playback singer with the most songs in the world.
Lata has also made an album in Indonesia with Rhoma Irama which resulted in 4 duet albums of Rhoma's songs sung by Latta, such as the songs Mawar Merah and Orang Asing.
