Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was born in Lyallpur, Punjab, Dominion of Pakistan, October 13, 1948 and died in London, England, August 16, 1997.
Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan with his birth name Pervez Fateh Ali Khan is a Pakistani vocalist, musician, composer, and music director who is known throughout the world.
He is a legendary singer of Qawwali genre music, the praise music of Islamic Sufis which is a popular musical culture in North India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and more precisely South Asia.

Traditionally, Qawwali is practiced from generation to generation. Nusrat's family, originally from Faisalabad, Pakistan with ancestral roots from Afghanistan, has an unbroken tradition of performing Qawwali for 600 years.
One of Ustad Nusrat's honorifics is Shahenshah-e-Qawwali, which means: Emperor of Qawwals.
Received President's Award of Pakistan
In 1987, Khan received the President's Award of Pakistan for Pride of Performance for his contribution to Pakistani music.
In 1995 he received the UNESCO Music Prize. In 1996 he was awarded the Grand Prix des Amériques at the Montreal World Film Festival for his outstanding contribution to the art of cinema.
In the same year, Khan received the Fukuoka Asia Arts and Culture Prize. In 2005, Khan received the title and icon "Legends" award at the UK Asia Music Awards.
Ustad, Artist and Thinker
Time magazine of November 6, 2006, "60 Years of Asian Heroes", listed Ustad Nusrat as one of the 12 artists and thinkers of the last 60 years.
He also appeared on NPR's Voices 50 list in 2010. In August 2010 he was included in CNN's list of the twenty most iconic musicians of the last fifty years.
In 2008, Khan was listed at number 14 on UGO's list of the greatest singers of all time. Nusrat has been given many honors during his 25-year musical career.
He was given the title of Ustad after playing and performing classical music in Lahore on the death anniversary of his father, Ustad Fateh Ali Khan. His father was also a great musician and qawwali singer of his time. (*)
