FEMUSINDO.com - Frederick Nathaniel "Toots" Hibbert, with his famous name Toots Hibbert, was born in May Pen, Colony of Jamaica, on December 8, 1942.

He is a Jamaican singer and songwriter who became the lead vocalist for the reggae and ska band Toots and the Maytals.

As a reggae pioneer, he performed for six decades and helped establish some of the foundations of reggae music.

The Origin of the Reggae Genre Name

Hibbert's 1968 song "Do the Reggay" is widely considered to be the origin of the name of the reggae genre. His band's album True Love won a Grammy Award in 2005.

The band's 1980 performance at Hammersmith Palais in London was released as a live album, less than 24 hours after it was recorded, earning it a place in the Guinness Book of World Records.

The band released Knock Out! in 1981. However, the original Maytals trio later disbanded. After a hiatus, Hibbert continued to tour as a solo artist.

Order of Jamaica Recipient

In 1988, he released Toots in Memphis, which earned him his first Grammy nomination. Hibbert restarted the band in the mid-1990s without Gordon and Mathias.

In 2010, Hibbert was ranked 71st on Rolling Stone magazine's "100 Greatest Singers of All Time."

In August 2012, it was announced that he had received the Order of Jamaica, the country's fifth-highest honor.

Hibbert died at the University Hospital of the West Indies in Kingston on September 12, 2020, at the age of 77, in a medically induced coma.

In a statement, Hibbert's underlying cause of death was Covid-19 during the pandemic in Jamaica. (*)
