FEMUSINDO.com - João Gilberto, born João Gilberto do Prado Pereira de Oliveira, was born in Juazeiro, Bahia, Brazil, on June 10, 1931.
He is a Brazilian guitarist, singer, and composer who was a pioneer of the bossa nova music genre in the late 1950s.
Across the world, he is often referred to as the "Father of Bossa Nova". In his home country of Brazil, he is referred to as "O Mito" or "The Legend".
Won Many Awards
In 1965, the album Getz/Gilberto became the first jazz recording to win a Grammy Award for Album of the Year.
The album also won Best Jazz Instrumental Album – Individual or Group and Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical.
Nominated for the 1978 Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Performance, the album Amoroso, and winner of the 2001 Grammy for Best World Music Album João voz e violão.
Legendary singer João Gilberto died in Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on July 6, 2019 at the age of 88. (*)
