Husein Mutahar Indonesian Music Composer and Statesman, Founder of Paskibraka



FEMUSINDO.com - Husein Mutahar, or better known as H. Mutahar, is an Indonesian music composer who is also the founder of Paskibraka (Heirloom Flag Raising Troops).

H. Mutahar with his full name Muhammad Husein bin Salim bin Ahmad bin Salim bin Ahmad al-Muthahar, was born in Samarang, Midden Java, Dutch East Indies (now Semarang, Central Java), August 5, 1916.

Husein Mutahar, who was born into an Arab-Indonesian family, is known to have actively mastered at least six languages.

Statesman in the Early Independence Period

This statesman in the early days of Indonesian independence graduated from MULO B (1934) and AMS A-I (1938) and studied for a year at the Faculty of Law, Gadjah Mada University for the period 1946-1947.

In 1945, Mutahar worked as Secretary to the Commander of the Indonesian Navy in Yogyakarta, then became a high-ranking official at the State Secretariat in Yogyakarta (1947).

Subsequently, he received positions that jumped between departments. The peak of his career as a state official was perhaps as the Indonesian Ambassador to the Holy See (Vatican) (1969-1973).

His last position in government was as Acting Secretary General of the Department of Foreign Affairs (1974).

His Popular Songs

As a composer, his popular songs include the hymn Syukur (introduced in January 1945) and the Hari Merdeka march (1946).

His last work, Dirgahayu Indonesiaku, became the official song for the 50th anniversary of Indonesian Independence.

His scouting songs include "Gembira", "Tepuk Tangan Silang-silang", "Mari Tepuk", "Slamatlah", "Jangan Putus Asa", "Saat Berpisah", and "Hymne Pramuka".

H. Mutahar died in Jakarta on June 9, 2004 at the age of 87 due to old age. His body was buried in Jeruk Purut Cemetery, South Jakarta (Jaksel). (*)
