During his career in music, he has produced over 160 chart singles to his name from 1955 to 2013.
His earliest musical influences were Roy Acuff and Bill Monroe, although the artistic talents of Hank Williams and Lefty Frizzell helped shape his vocal style.
Before becoming a singer and songwriter, George Jones served in the United States Marine Corps and was discharged in 1953.
In 1959, Jones recorded "White Lightning", written by The Big Bopper, which launched his career as a singer.

Jones died in Nashville, Tennessee, U.S., on April 26, 2013 at the age of 81, due to hypoxic respiratory failure and was buried at Woodlawn Cemetery in Nashville.
His death made headlines around the world. Many country music stations, as well as several other formats, stopped or changed their playlists and played his songs throughout the day.
In 2023, Rolling Stone ranked Jones at number 24 on their list of the 200 Greatest Singers of All Time.
