K-Pop, Korean Pop or Korean Pop is a subgenre of pop music originating from South Korea (South Korea).
This music genre, which was originally called changga, appeared in Korea in the 1885s. Changga is music with modern instrumental strains such as guitar, drums, flute, and others.
This music is an adaptation of western pop and uses Korean lyrics, some of which are indeed western songs that have been arranged and translated into Korean.
During the Japanese occupation of Korea (1910–1945), this genre of music was used to express the sadness, pain, and hopes of the Korean people.
However, Japan confiscated the existing changga collection and published its own lyric book. One of the popular and well-known songs until now is "Huimangga" which means Hope.
Korean Pop Music was initially divided into different genres, the first was the "oldies" genre which was influenced by western music and popular in the 60s.
In the 1970s, rock music was introduced with its pioneer being Cho Yong-pil. Another genre that was quite popular was Trot music, this music was the result of the acculturation of traditional Korean music with Gospel or Spiritual music.
This musical style was later re-adapted by composer Masao Koga and is known as enka music in Japan.
The debut performance of the Seo Taiji and Boys group in 1992 marked the beginning of modern pop music in Korea which gave a new color with the flow of American rap, rock, techno music.
The success of the Seo Taiji and Boys group was followed by other music groups such as Panic, and Deux. This music trend also gave birth to many other quality music groups and musicians until now.
Pop music in the 90s tended to be dance and hip hop. The main market was teenagers, so this decade saw the emergence of many very popular “teen idol” groups, such as CLON, H.O.T, Sechs Kies, S.E.S, Fin.K.L and g.o.d.
Most of these music groups have disbanded and their members have gone solo. In the 2000s, talented newcomers began to emerge.
The R&B and Hip-Hop music genres that were oriented towards America produced artists such as MC Mong, 1TYM, Rain, Super Junior, Big Bang who were quite successful in Korea and abroad.
In its development, various Korean artists have achieved success internationally. Currently, K-Pop singers are not only from Korea, but many come from other countries who have successfully made their mark in K-Pop.
Group names, such as NCT, BLACKPINK, EXO, BTS, Seventeen, Le Sserafim, and New Jeans must be familiar to K-Popers around the world. (*)
