FEMUSINDO.com - The Grammy Awards; the original name of the Gramophone Awards, or also commonly called Grammy is an award given by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences in the United States.

The Grammy Awards are named after the small trophy and gold-plated reproduction of a gramophone. This award is given to recognize outstanding achievements in the music industry.

The annual award ceremony also features performances by several famous artists, and the presentation of the awards is very popular.

This award is recognized by several other music industry awards, such as the Emmy Awards (television), Tony Awards (stage performance), and Academy Awards (film).

The first Grammy Awards were held on May 4, 1959, to honor musical achievements by artists for the year 1958.

After 2011, NARAS revamped many of the Grammy Award categories for 2012. The 62nd Grammy Awards were held on January 26, 2020, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.

History of the Grammy Awards

The Grammy Awards have their origins in the Hollywood Walk of Fame project of the 1950s.

As record executives selected for the Walk of Fame committee, they worked to compile a list of important recording industry people who might be eligible for a star.

They realized that there were many people who were leaders in their business who had never received a star on Hollywood Boulevard.

The music executives decided to remedy this by creating an award given by their industry similar to the Oscars and Emmys. This was the beginning of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences.

After deciding to create such an award, they eventually used the name of Emile Berliner's invention, the gramophone, for the award, which was first presented in 1958.

Gold-Plated Gramophone Trophy

The gold-plated Grammy trophy, depicting a gramophone, is handcrafted and assembled by Billings Artworks in Ridgway, Colorado.

In 1990 the original Grammy design was replaced with the traditional soft pewter to make it less prone to damage, and to make the trophy larger and more imposing.

The trophy with the recipient's name engraved on it is no longer available until after the awards ceremony, so it is reused each year for the broadcast.

As of February 2009, a total of 7,578 Grammy trophies have been awarded to those who have made outstanding achievements in the music industry.
