Phil Collins, Legendary British Musician from Grammy Award Winner to Classic Drummer Hall of Fame

FEMUSINDO.com - Philip David Charles Collins, with his famous name Phil Collins, is a legendary pop and rock musician from England.

His presence in the music world was quite prominent in the 1980s. He is also known as the vocalist of the progressive rock group called Genesis and a Grammy Award winner.

Collins, who was born in Chiswick, London, England, January 30, 1951, began his music career as a drummer, first with the group Flaming Youth and then with Genesis.

He became the lead vocalist of Genesis in 1976. Collins left the group Genesis in 1996 to focus on being a solo musician.

In addition to being a singer, songwriter, musician and record producer, he is also known as an actor in several films.

Having a Successful Career

As a solo artist, Collins has had a successful career, achieving three number one singles in the UK and seven number one singles in the United States.

In total, his work with Genesis, other artists, and solo produced more US top-40 singles than any other artist throughout the 1980s.

He wrote the songs for the Disney animated film Tarzan (1999), for which he wrote and performed the songs "Two Worlds", "Son of Man", "Strangers Like Me" and "You'll Be in My Heart", the latter of which earned him the Academy Award for Best Original Song.

Rejoining Genesis

Collins rejoined Genesis for their Turn It On Again Tour in 2007, after retiring for five years to focus on his family life.

In 2016, Collins released his memoir and headlined the Not Dead Yet Tour from 2017 to 2019.

He later rejoined Genesis in 2020 for a second and final reunion tour, which ran from 2021 to 2022.

Collins' discography includes eight studio albums that have sold 33.5 million certified units in the US and an estimated 150 million records sold worldwide, making him one of the world's best-selling artists.

Collins is one of only three recording artists, along with Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson, to have sold more than 100 million records, either as a solo artist or separately as a lead member of a band.

Awards and Honors

Collins has won eight Grammy Awards, six Brit Awards (winning Best British Male Artist three times), two Golden Globe Awards, one Academy Award, and a Disney Legend Award.

He has been awarded six Ivor Novello Awards from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors, including the International Achievement Award.

He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1999, and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2003 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Genesis in 2010.

Ranked by Rolling Stone at number 43 on their 100 Greatest Drummers of All Time, he was inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 2012 and the Classic Drummer Hall of Fame in 2013. (*)
