Currently, Coldplay consists of Chris Martin as vocalist, Jonny Buckland as guitarist, Guy Berryman as bassist, Will Champion as drummer and percussionist, and Phil Harvey as creative director.

They met while studying at University College London (UCL) and started making music from 1997 to 1998, initially called Starfish.

Signing Contracts and Winning Awards

After releasing their first EP, Safety (1998), Coldplay began signing with Parlophone in 1999.

Their debut album, Parachutes (2000), containing their first single "Yellow" won the Brit Award for British Album of the Year, the Grammy Award for Best Alternative Album, and a Mercury Prize nomination.

Their second album, A Rush of Blood to the Head (2002), won the same award, containing the single "Clocks" which won the Grammy Award for Record of the Year.

Nominated for Grammy Awards

Their third album, X&Y (2005), completed their "trilogy", as did their fourth album, Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends (2008).

Both albums were nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Rock Album, the latter winning; both became the best-selling albums of their respective years, topping the charts in 30 countries.

Viva la Vida was also nominated for Album of the Year, and its title track became the first British band to have a simultaneous number-one single in the UK and the US in the 21st century.

Coldplay have since diversified their sound over the course of their next five studio albums, the most recent being Music of the Spheres (2021).

With 100 million albums sold, Coldplay are the best-selling music artist. They are the sixth most awarded band in history, including the most Brit Award nominations and wins.

They are also the seventh band to have had the highest-grossing concert tour, the third on the 50 best-selling albums in the UK and the first album in the country.

They are also the most number-one artists with all of their studio albums, and the first British group to debut at number one on the Billboard Hot 100.

Coldplay have been named the most influential band of the 21st century, and Forbes has called them the epitome of the alternative scene.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducted the album A Rush of Blood to the Head into one of the "200 Definitive Albums" and the single "Yellow" into one of the "Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll", making it one of the most successful and important records in the history of the music industry. (*)
