Four "General Field" Categories at The Grammy Awards

FEMUSINDO.com - The Grammy Awards are a music awards event given by the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences (NARAS) in the United States.

This prestigious award, which is the winner and nominee, is given to recognize outstanding achievements in the music industry.

The most anticipated music award by musicians and music lovers around the world is given in various categories that isolate certain contributions to the music and recording industry.

Of the many awards and nominations, here are four "General Field" categories at the Grammy Awards:

Best New Artist

The Grammy Award for Best New Artist is a Grammy award for the best new artist that has been given since the 2nd Annual Grammy Awards in 1960 (except in 1967).

This award is given to new artists who release, during the Eligibility Year and the first recording that establishes the artist's public identity.

The best new artist award has a reputation for being given to artists whose success in the music industry ends in the short term.

From 1995 to 2021, members of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences nominated their choice for best new artist.

The list of the top twenty artists was presented to the Nominations Review Committee, a specially selected group of anonymous members, who initially selected the top five artists for nominations in the category in a special ballot.

In 2018, the number of artists nominated increased to eight. The remaining members then voted for the winner from the final nominations.

In 2021, it was announced that the Nomination Review Committees would be disbanded, and the final nominations for best new artist would be decided by a vote of the members.

Starting in 2022, the number of nominees in the category increased to 10. However, the decision to expand the number of nominees in the category was made 24 hours before the nominations were announced after the initial version of the nominations list had been circulated.

This allowed Baby Keem and Arooj Aftab to be nominated as they were the artists who received the most votes out of the eight other nominees.

For the 2024 ceremony, the number of nominees for Best New Artist has been reduced to eight.

To be eligible for the Best New Artist category, an artist, duo, or group must have released at least five singles/songs or one album (until 2020, the maximum was 30 singles/songs or three albums, but this limit was removed for the 2021 awards season).

They must also not have been in the category more than three times, including as a featured member of an established group.

They must have achieved a breakthrough in the public consciousness and made an impact on the music landscape during the eligibility period.

The new rules went into effect for the 59th Annual Grammy Awards. The category was then expanded to eight nominees in 2019.

Starting in 2021, a screening committee is tasked with determining whether the artist has achieved a breakthrough or distinction prior to the eligibility year. Such a determination, if not met, will result in disqualification.

Song of The Year

The Grammy Award for Song of the Year is an award presented at the Grammy Awards, an event founded in 1958 and originally called the Gramophone Awards.

The Song of the Year award is one of the four most prestigious categories at the awards, along with Best New Artist, Record of the Year and Album of the Year, which has been presented annually since the first Grammy Awards in 1959.

According to the description guide for the 54th Grammy Awards, the award is given to honor artistic achievement, technical proficiency, and overall excellence in the recording industry, without regard to album sales or chart position.

If the winning song contains samples or interpolations of existing material, the publisher and original songwriter may submit a Certificate of Winner.

Song of the Year is related to the other general category awards at the Grammy Awards, but is conceptually distinct from Record of the Year or Album of the Year.

While the Record of the Year and Song of the Year awards are given for a single or a song from an album, the Song of the Year award is given only to the composer of the song.

Meanwhile, the Record of the Year award is given to the artist and production team for a particular song recording.

The Song of the Year award is given to the songwriter of a song that must contain both melody and lyrics and must be a new song or a song that first reached peak popularity during the qualifying year.

Songs that contain prominent samples or interpolations are not eligible for the Song of the Year award.

The award is not always limited to new or newly popular songs, for example in 1992, when the winner was Natalie Cole's cover of "Unforgettable" (a song first recorded by Nat King Cole and made famous in the 1950s).

The only rule is that the song must have been recorded during the eligibility year and not have previously been nominated for the award.

Since the late 1960s, other songwriters' awards have been given for specific genre categories, including the Grammy Award for Best Country Song (since 1965).

Then there is the Grammy Award for Best R&B Song (since 1969), the Grammy Award for Best Song Written for Visual Media (since 1988), the Grammy Award for Best Rock Song (since 1992).

More recently, the Grammy Award for Best Rap Song (since 2004), the Grammy Award for Best Gospel Song (from 2006 to 2014), the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Christian Music Song (from 2012 to 2014).

Then there is the Grammy Award for Best American Roots Song (since 2014), the Grammy Award for Best Gospel Performance/Song (since 2015), and the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song (since 2015).

The category was expanded to include eight nominees in 2019 and 10 nominees in 2022. The number of nominees was restored to eight starting with the 2024 ceremony.

In 2023, a special category honoring songwriters was established: Songwriter of the Year, Non-Classical.

Album of The Year

The Grammy Award for Album of the Year is an award that honors artistic achievement, technical proficiency, and overall excellence in the recording industry, without regard to album sales, chart position, or critical reception.

Commonly known as "The Big Award," Album of the Year is the most prestigious award category at the Grammy Awards.

Over the years, the rules for who receives the award have changed. 1959–1965: Artist only and 1966–1998: Artist and producer.

1999–2002: Artist, producer, and recording engineer or mixer and 2003–2017: Artist, featured artist, producer, mastering engineer, and recording engineer or mixer.

2018–2020: Artist, featured artist, producer, songwriter (new material), mastering engineer, and recording engineer or mixer (only those credited for at least 33% of the album's playing time).

2021–2023: Artist, featured artist, producer, songwriter (new material), mastering engineer, and recording engineer or mixer (regardless of credited playing time).

2024–future: Artist, featured artist, producer, songwriter (new material), mastering engineer, and recording engineer or mixer (only those whose names are listed as artists for at least 20% of the album's playing time).

The category was expanded to eight nominees in 2019 and ten in 2022. Beginning with the 2024 event, the number of nominees has been reduced again to eight.

Album of the Year is awarded for the entire album, and the award is given to the artist, featured artist, producer, songwriter, mastering engineer, and recording engineer or mixer who made significant contributions to the album.

The same title is given to Record of the Year, which is given to a song or track from the album. The award is given to the artist, producer, mastering engineer, and recording engineer or mixer for that song.

Record of The Year

Record of the Year is a Grammy Award for the best recording of the year, given to a particular song or single since 1959 to the present.

The award is given to all parties involved in the recording process, including the artist, producer, recording engineer, mixing engineer, and mastering engineer.

The award honors artistic achievement, technical proficiency and overall excellence in the recording industry, without regard to sales or chart position.

The Recording Academy (formerly the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences; abbreviated NARAS) is an American academic academy of musicians, producers, recording artists and other music professionals.

The academy is best known for its Grammy Awards, which recognize achievements in the music industry for songs and popular music worldwide.

The Recording Academy is a founding partner of the Grammy Museum, a non-profit organization whose mission is to preserve and educate about the history and meaning of music.

The Recording Academy also founded MusiCares, a charity with the stated purpose of affecting the health and well-being of the music community.

The Recording Academy’s advocacy team lobbies for the rights of music creators at the local, state, and federal levels.

Some things to note about the Record of the Year award are that it is given to a specific recorded song, not a composition or album of songs.

This award is different from the Song of the Year award which is given to the composer of the song and there are some exceptions for opera and music videos/films.

Also, recordings submitted for this award must be released within the appropriate time period and be available to the public as a separate purchase or streaming audio. (*)
