One of the Best-Selling Bands of All Time
With over 100 million records sold worldwide, the Red Hot Chili Peppers are one of the best-selling bands of all time.
They are the most successful band in alternative rock history, having had the most number-one singles (14).
They have also had the most cumulative weeks at number one (85) and the most top-ten songs (25) on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart.
They have won six Grammy Awards, were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012, and will receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2022.
Multiple Album Releases and Personnel Changes
In the 1980s, the Red Hot Chili Peppers released the albums The Red Hot Chili Peppers (album) (1984), Freaky Styley (1985), The Uplift Mofo Party Plan (1987), and Mother's Milk (1989).
However, their first major commercial success came with the release of Blood Sugar Sex Magik (1991).
The album, supported by hit singles such as "Under the Bridge", "Give It Away", and "Breaking the Girl", sold 14 million copies and made them a worldwide hit.
Frusciante was uncomfortable with their newfound popularity and abruptly left the tour in 1992.
After a series of temporary guitarists, he was replaced by Dave Navarro, who appeared on the group's sixth album, One Hot Minute (1995).
Although successful, the album failed to gain popularity. In 1998, after Navarro's departure, Frusciante rejoined the band.
Greatest Commercial Success and Charting
Red Hot Chili Peppers' seventh album, Californication (1999), was their biggest commercial success, with 16 million copies sold worldwide.
The 1999 release produced the popular singles "Otherside", "Californication" and "Scar Tissue".
In the 2000s, they released the albums By the Way (2002) and Stadium Arcadium (2006) which were also successful.
Stadium Arcadium was the Red Hot Chili Peppers' first album to reach number one on the US Billboard 200 chart.
Frusciante left the band again in 2009 to focus on his solo career. He was replaced by Josh Klinghoffer.
Klinghoffer appeared on I'm with You (2011) and The Getaway (2016), before Frusciante rejoined in 2019.
They released their 12th album, Unlimited Love, in 2022. Their 13th album, Return of the Dream Canteen, was released in October 2022. (*)
