FEMUSINDO.com - Formed in 1986 in Berkeley, California, Green Day is an American punk rock band whose personnel consist of the trio Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, and Tré Cool.
Green Day is highly recognized for their success in making the punk rock genre popular again, together with Sublime, The Offspring, and Rancid.
In 1990, together with their first drummer, John Kiffmeyer aka Al Sobrante, Green Day recorded their first album, 39/Smooth. However, in the same year, Tre Cool replaced drummer John Kiffmeyer who left because he wanted to continue his studies.
Tré Cool then began contributing to Green Day's second album, Kerplunk, and has been a permanent member ever since.
Diamond Status from RIAA
Green Day's breakthrough album, Dookie, released in 1994, managed to achieve diamond status from the RIAA and brought Green Day to the peak of their career.
In contrast to Dookie, Green Day's next three albums, Insomniac, Nimrod, and Warning, failed to achieve the same success as Dookie.
Although Insomniac and Nimrod managed to achieve platinum status and Warning achieved gold status, all three albums showed their overall popularity declining drastically.
It was their 2004 rock opera album, American Idiot, that revived their popularity, especially with a younger generation of fans. American Idiot sold over 5 million copies in the United States alone.
Best Chart Performance of All Time
Their eighth album, 21st Century Breakdown, was released in 2009 and managed to achieve the best chart performance of Green Day's career.
Green Day has sold over 75 million copies of their albums worldwide with 24.639 million in the United States alone.
Green Day has won 5 Grammy Awards: Best Alternative Album for Dookie, Best Rock Album for American Idiot and Record of the Year for "Boulevard of Broken Dreams".
Then, Best Rock Album for the second time for 21st Century Breakdown and Best Musical Show Album for American Idiot: The Original Broadway Cast Recording. (*)
