FEMUSINDO.com - Metallica is a heavy metal music group from the United States formed in Los Angeles in 1981 by James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich.
The name Metallica itself was originally planned by a friend of Lars Ulrich to be the name of a music magazine. However, Lars Ulrich used it as the name of his band.
The first formation of Metallica was Lars Ulrich (drums), James Hetfield (vocals and guitar), Lloyd Grant (guitar) and Ron McGovney (bass).
Metallica's First Song
This formation gave birth to the first song titled Hit The Lights, then entered the rock compilation album Metal Massacre in 1981.
After Metal Massacre was released, Grant and Ron resigned. Grant's position was replaced by Dave Mustaine and Ron's position was replaced by Cliff Burton.
In July 1982, this formation released the demo album No Life Till Leather. This demo led Metallica to get an agent, then moved to New York.
In 1983, Metallica planned to do a short tour to several cities. Unfortunately, Hetfield and Mustaine were involved in a feud, until finally Mustaine left and then founded Megadeth.
Mustaine's position was replaced by Kirk Hammett; guitarist from the group Exodus. This third formation released the album Kill 'Em All in May, 1983.
Metallica is Getting More Famous
In 1984, Metallica became bigger by releasing the album Ride the Lightning. This album lasted 50 weeks in the Billboard Top 200. In order to facilitate promotion, they also released the mini album Jump In The Fire.
September, 1985, Metallica produced the album Master Of Puppets. Metallica re-entered the Billboard Top 40 for 72 weeks. This album is an album that went platinum without singles and videos.
On September 27, 1986, on a tour to Scandinavia - the bus they were on had an accident and Cliff Burton (bass) died.
This event hit all the band members hard. Even Dave Mustaine who founded Megadeth, remembered Cliff's death in the song In My Darkest Hour (album Megadeth: So Far.. So Good.. So What!).
Releasing the First Video Clip
In October, 1986, Cliff Burton's position was replaced by Jason Newsted; bassist from the group Flotsam and Jetsam.
The album ...And Justice For All was released in September, 1988. Metallica began releasing video clips. Their first video was for the song "One".
This video reached number 1 on MTV. This success then encouraged the production of the video clip Cliff 'Em All; a video memory for Cliff Burton.
At the end of 1990, the Metallica album was recorded. The album made Metallica achieve quadruple platinum sales and became the number one album in eight countries in America and Europe and won the Grammy Award, Best Metal Performer category for two years in a row.
Release and Recording of New Albums
Bassist Jason Newsted left the band after a dispute with James Hetfield. This feud was caused by Jason Newsted spending more time with his own projects. The other band members felt that Metallica should be prioritized, even though at that time Metallica was on hiatus.
The group currently consists of Lars Ulrich (drums), James Hetfield (vocals and guitar), Kirk Hammett (guitar) and Robert Trujillo (bass). Other former members include Ron McGovney (bass), Dave Mustaine (guitar), Cliff Burton (bass) and Jason Newsted (bass).
On August 10, 2008 Metallica finally finished the recording process of their new ninth studio album Death Magnetic which was released on September 12, 2008 worldwide.
The album was produced by Rick Rubin and the recording process was done at Sound City Studios, Shangri La Studios and at Metallica's own studio. Their first single and video clip "The Day That Never Comes".
