Dennis Brown Crown Prince of Reggae, Awarded Order of Distinction



FEMUSINDO.com - Dennis Emmanuel Brown, better known as Dennis Brown, was born in Kingston, Jamaica, on February 1, 1957.

He is a Jamaican reggae singer, whom Bob Marley called Brown his favorite singer, dubbing him "Crown Prince of Reggae".

With his legendary works, Brown has proven to be influential on future generations of reggae singers.

Prolific Career as a Singer

During his prolific career, which began in the late 1960s when he was eleven years old, he recorded more than 75 albums and became one of the main stars of lovers rock, a subgenre of reggae.

In the late 1990s, Brown's health began to deteriorate. He experienced respiratory problems that he suffered from.

He fell ill in May 1999 after touring in Brazil with other reggae singers, where he was diagnosed with pneumonia.

After returning to Kingston, Jamaica, on the evening of June 30, 1999, he was rushed to Kingston University Hospital, suffering a heart attack.

Brown died the following day, July 1, 1999, at the age of 42. The official cause of death was a collapsed lung.

Awarded the Order of Distinction

On August 6, 2011, coinciding with the country's 49th anniversary of independence, the Governor-General of Jamaica posthumously awarded Brown the Order of Distinction with the rank of Commander (CD).

The rank of Commander was awarded to the Crown Prince of Reggae for his contributions to the Jamaican music industry.

In April 2012, a commemorative blue plaque was installed at Brown's home in Harlesden by the Nubian Jak Community Trust.

In 2023, Rolling Stone ranked Brown 67th on its list of the 200 Greatest Singers of All Time. (*)
