Minnie Riperton Singer With Five-Octave Vocal Range



FEMUSINDO.com - Minnie Julia Riperton Rudolph, with her famous name Minnie Riperton, was born in Chicago, Illinois, U.S., on November 8, 1947.

She is an American soul singer and songwriter who is known for her five-octave vocal range and use of the whistle register.

As a child, she studied music, drama, and dance at the Abraham Lincoln Center, Chicago. In her teens, she sang lead vocals for the Chicago girl group, The Gems.

Reaching the Peak of Her Career

Her early affiliation with Chicago-based Chess Records gave her the opportunity to sing background vocals for various established artists.

She sang background vocals, such as Etta James, Fontella Bass, Ramsey Lewis, Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry, and Muddy Waters.

While in Chess, Riperton also sang lead for the psychedelic soul band Rotary Connection from 1967 to 1971.

On April 5, 1975, Riperton reached the pinnacle of her career with the No. 1 single "Lovin' You". The single was the final release from her 1974 gold album Perfect Angel.

Spokesperson for the American Cancer Society

In 1977, she became a spokesperson for the American Cancer Society (ACS), a national nonprofit organization dedicated to eradicating cancer.

In 1978, she received the American Cancer Society's Courage Award, presented to her at the White House by President Jimmy Carter.

Minnie Riperton died in Los Angeles, California, United States, on July 12, 1979, at the age of 31.

In 2023, Rolling Stone ranked Riperton number 65 on its list of the 200 Greatest Singers of All Time. (*)
