Pioneer of The Soul Music Genre, Ray Charles The Greatest Artist of All Time

FEMUSINDO.com - Ray Charles Robinson, who is known by his stage name Ray Charles, was born in Albany, Georgia, United States, on September 23, 1930.

He is a well-known American singer, songwriter, pianist, and composer. Charles became blind during childhood due to glaucoma.

Among friends and fellow musicians, he preferred to be called "Brother Ray". However, he was often referred to as "The Genius".

Pioneer of Soul Music

Charles pioneered the soul music genre during the 1950s by combining blues, jazz, rhythm and blues, and gospel styles into the music he recorded for Atlantic.

He contributed to the integration of country, rhythm and blues, and pop music during the 1960s with his crossover success on ABC Records, especially with his two Modern Music albums.

While with ABC, Charles became one of the first black musicians to be given artistic control by a mainstream record company.

Billboard Chart Hits

In 1960 he recorded "Georgia On My Mind," the first of three career No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100.

In 1962 his album Modern Sounds In Country And Western Music became his first album to top the Billboard 200.

Charles had several singles reach the Top 40 on various Billboard charts: 44 on the US R&B Singers, 11th on the Hot 100 Singers, and 2nd on the Hot Country Singers.

Won Grammy Awards

For his musical contributions, Charles received the Kennedy Center Honors, the National Medal of Arts, and the Polar Music Prize. He has won 17 Grammy Awards, including 5 posthumously.

Charles received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1987, and 10 of his recordings have been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

Rolling Stone ranked Charles No. 10 on its list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time, and No. 2 on its list of the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time.

Honorary Doctorate of Arts and Letters

In 1990, he was awarded an honorary doctorate of arts by the University of South Florida.

In 2001, Morehouse College honored Charles with the Candle Award for Lifetime Achievement in Arts and Entertainment, and in the same year gave him an honorary doctorate of letters.

Charles has also received several other prestigious awards, including The Grammy Awards of 2005 which was dedicated to Charles. (*)
