FEMUSINDO.com - Frederick "Freddie" Mercury with his real name Farrokh Bulsara, was born in Stone Town, Sultanate of Zanzibar, September 5, 1946.
He is a singer-songwriter, record producer and lead vocalist of the British rock band Queen.
He is considered one of the best singers in the history of popular music and is known for his flamboyant stage personality and four-octave vocal range.
Mercury was born in Zanzibar to Parsi parents from India. After growing up in Zanzibar and then India, his family moved to Middlesex, England, in his late teens.
Form of the Queen Music Group
Frederick "Freddie" Mercury formed the Queen music group in 1970 with guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor.
Mercury wrote many hits for Queen, including "Bohemian Rhapsody", "Killer Queen", "Somebody to Love", "Don't Stop Me Now", "Crazy Little Thing Called Love", and "We Are the Champions".
In addition to Queen, he also had a solo career and occasionally worked as a producer and guest musician for other artists.
Mercury died in Kensington, London, England, on 24 November 1991 at the age of 45 from complications of Aids, having confirmed the day before his death that he had contracted the disease.
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
As a member of Queen, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001, the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2003, and the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2004.
In 1992, a year after his death, Mercury was posthumously honoured with the Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music, and a tribute concert was held at Wembley Stadium, London.
In 2002, he came in at number 58 in a poll by the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) of the 100 Greatest Britons.
Mercury was voted the greatest male singer of all time in a 2005 poll conducted by Blender and MTV2.
Greatest Rock Performers of All Time
Mercury was also ranked 18th on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 greatest singers ever in 2008 and ranked second on Rolling Stone's readers' list in 2011.
Mercury was described by AllMusic as "one of the greatest rock performers of all time," with "one of the greatest voices in any genre of music."
Upon its release in November 2018, the Mercury and Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody became the highest-grossing music biopic of all time. (*)
