Alternative Rock Band R.E.M, Inducted into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

FEMUSINDO.com - REM (written by R.E.M) is an American alternative rock band formed in Athens, Georgia, in 1980.

The band was founded by drummer Bill Berry, guitarist Peter Buck, bassist Mike Mills and lead vocalist Michael Stipe, who were students at the University of Georgia.

One of the first alternative rock bands, REM is known for Buck's ringing, arpeggiated guitar style and Stipe's distinctive vocal quality.

Other hallmarks of the band are their unique stage presence, obscure lyrics, Mills' melodic bass lines and backing vocals and Berry's tight, economical drumming style.

Released Singles and Pioneered the Genre

R.E.M released their first single, "Radio Free Europe", in 1981 on the independent record label Hib-Tone. It was followed by the Chronic Town EP in 1982, their first release on IRS Records.

In the early 1990s, other alternative rock acts such as Nirvana, Pixies and Pavement, looked to R.E.M. as pioneers of the genre.

After Berry's departure in 1997, the group continued with mixed critical and commercial success.

Most Commercially Successful Albums

R.E.M.'s most commercially successful albums, Out of Time (1991) and Automatic for the People (1992), placed them at the forefront of alternative rock as it entered the mainstream.

Out of Time received seven nominations at the 34th Annual Grammy Awards, and its lead single, "Losing My Religion" became R.E.M.'s highest-charting and best-selling hit. Monster (1994) continued their success.

In 1996, R.E.M. re-signed with Warner Bros., for the most expensive record deal ever at the time.

They toured and the band recorded their next album. The resulting record, New Adventures in Hi-Fi (1996).

The album is hailed as the band's last great album and a favorite of the members, growing to cult status over the years.

Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

In 2007, R.E.M. was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in its first year of eligibility. Berry reunited with the band for the inauguration.

The band collaborated with producer Jacknife Lee on their final two studio albums, Accelerate (2008) and Collapse into Now (2011).

The group amicably disbanded in 2011, having sold over 90 million albums worldwide and become one of the world's best-selling music acts.

But, after a long breakup, the band reunited in 2024 to perform "Losing My Religion" at their induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. (*)
