Jean Michel Jarre French Composer, Performer and Record Producer, Breaks Record for Largest Audience

FEMUSINDO.com - Jean-Michel André Jarre, better known as Jean Michel Jarre, is a French composer, performer and record producer.

Born in Lyon, France, on August 24, 1948, this musician is a pioneer in the electronic, ambient and new-age genres.

He is known for organizing outdoor performances featuring his music, accompanied by large laser shows, large projections and fireworks.

Introduced to Various Forms of Art

Jarre was raised in Lyon by his mother and grandparents and trained to play the piano. From an early age, he was introduced to various forms of art, including street buskers, jazz musicians and artist Pierre Soulages.

His musical style is perhaps most influenced by Pierre Schaeffer, a pioneer of musique concrète at the Groupe de Recherches Musicales.

His first commercial success was his 1976 album Oxygène. Recorded in a makeshift studio at his home, the album sold an estimated 18 million copies.

Breaking the Record for Largest Audience

The success of Oxygène was followed in 1978 by Équinoxe, and in 1979, Jarre performed to an audience of over one million at the Place de la Concorde, a record he has since broken three times.

More albums followed, but his 1979 concert set the blueprint for his future worldwide performances. Several of his albums have been released in conjunction with large-scale outdoor events.

Attended by an estimated 3.5 million people, he holds the world record for the largest audience ever at an outdoor event for his concert in Moscow on 6 September 1997.

By 2004, Jarre had sold an estimated 80 million albums and singles. He was the first Western musician to be officially invited to perform in the People's Republic of China. (*)
