FEMUSINDO.com - Allah Rakha Rahman (A. R. Rahman) with the real name Dileep Kumar, is an Indian music composer, record producer, singer, songwriter, musician, multi-instrumentalist, and philanthropist.
The artist with the initials ARR was born in Madras, Madras State, India, January 6, 1967, is known for his works in Indian cinema; especially in Tamil and Hindi, with occasional forays into international cinema.
Making Some Film Music
With his in-house studio Panchathan Record Inn, Rahman's career in making film music began in the early 1990s with the Tamil film Roja.
After that, he continued to compose music for several songs for Tamil language films, including Mani Ratnam's politically charged Bombay, Kadhalan Urban, Thiruda Thiruda and S. Shankar's debut film Gentleman.
Rahman's music for his first Hollywood film, the comedy Couples Retreat (2009), won the BMI Award for Best Music.
Best Original Score and Best Original Song
A. R. Rahman's music for Slumdog Millionaire (2008) earned him Best Original Score and Best Original Song (for Jai Ho) at the 81st Academy Awards.
He is the recipient of six National Film Awards, two Academy Awards, two Grammy Awards, one BAFTA Award and one Golden Globe Award.
He has also received six Tamil Nadu State Film Awards, fifteen Filmfare Awards and eighteen Filmfare Awards South.
Awarded the Padma Bhushan, the Highest Civilian Award
In 2010, the Government of India awarded him the Padma Bhushan, the country's third highest civilian award.
He was also awarded Best Compilation Soundtrack Album and Best Song Written for Visual Media at the 2010 Grammy Awards. He has been called "Isai Puyal" (musical storm) and "Mozart of Madras".
In 2006, he was honored by Stanford University for his contribution to global music. In 2008, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Rotary Club of Madras.
One of the 100 Most Influential People in the World
In 2009, he was included in Time's list of the 100 most influential people in the world. In 2013, he introduced 7.1 surround sound technology to South Indian films.
In 2014, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Berklee College of Music. He also received an honorary doctorate from Aligarh Muslim University.
In 2017, A. R. Rahman, who studied at Trinity College of Music, made his directorial and writing debut with the film Le Musk. (*)
