Estefan is an eight-time Grammy Award winner, recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and has been named one of the 100 greatest artists of all time by VH1 and Billboard.

Estefan's record sales exceed 100 million worldwide, making her one of the best-selling female singers of all time.

Starting Her Career as the Lead Singer of Miami Latin Boys

A contralto, Estefan, who was born in Havana, Cuba, on September 1, 1957, began her career as the lead singer of Miami Latin Boys, which later changed its name to Miami Sound Machine.

She and Miami Sound Machine achieved worldwide success with their 1985 single "Conga", which became Estefan's signature song.

The song helped Miami Sound Machine win the grand prix of the 15th annual Tokyo Music Festival in 1986.

In 1988, she and Miami Sound Machine achieved their first number-one hit with "Anything for You".

Accident and Comeback with World Tour

In March 1990, Estefan suffered a life-threatening neck fracture when her tour bus crashed near Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She underwent surgery to stabilize her neck and nearly a year of post-surgery rehabilitation, but made a full recovery.

A year later, in March 1991, Estefan launched her comeback with a world tour and album, Into the Light.

Won First Grammy Awards

Estefan's 1993 Spanish-language album, Mi Tierra, won the first of her three Grammy Awards for Best Latin Tropical Album. It was also the first Diamond album in Spanish.

Estefan has been honored with stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and the Las Vegas Walk of Fame. She was also a recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors in 2017 for her contributions to American cultural life.

She has won an MTV Video Music Award, been honored with the American Music Award for Lifetime Achievement, and has been named BMI Songwriter of the Year.

Inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame

Gloria Estefan was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and has received several Billboard Music Awards. She was also a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015.

Billboard has listed Estefan as the third most successful Latin Artist and the 23rd greatest Latin Artist of all time in the U.S., based on Latin albums and Latin songs charts.

Referred to as the "Queen of Latin Pop" by the media, she has amassed 38 number-one hits across the Billboard charts, including 15 top-10 hits on the Hot Latin Songs chart. (*)
