She is a singer, songwriter, and pianist who began her career as a child by singing gospel songs at the New Bethel Baptist Church in Detroit, where her father, C. L. Franklin, was the pastor at the church.
In 1960 at the age of 18, Aretha Louise Franklin entered a secular music career, recording at Columbia Records.
Pioneer of Inter-Genre Singers
She is one of the most respected female singers in the United States, as well as being the only pioneer figure for all inter-genre singers in the country.
After joining Atlantic Records in 1967, Franklin's career skyrocketed after releasing the songs "Respect", "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman", "Spanish Harlem", "Think" and Ain't No Way.
Her success skyrocketed in the late 1960s and equaled her position as one of the Top Chart Billboard female singers of that time.
The Queen of Soul
In the late 1960s, she was dubbed "The Queen of Soul". She was compared to singer Dionne Warwick. Although the two were rivals, they were known as close friends.
Franklin recorded famous albums, such as I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You (1967), Lady Soul (1968), Young, Gifted and Black (1972) and Amazing Grace (1972).
After her father was shot in 1979, Franklin left Atlantic and joined Arista Records.
Gaining Success
She gained success through the albums Jump to It (1982) and Who's Zoomin' Who? (1985) as well as her involvement in the film The Blues Brothers (1980).
In 1998, Franklin received international acclaim after singing the opera aria "Nessun dorma" at the 1998 Grammy Awards in place of Luciano Pavarotti.
That same year, "A Rose Is Still a Rose" became her last Top 40 hit.
Career and Death
Franklin recorded 112 Billboard charting singles, including 77 Hot 100 entries, 17 top-ten pop singles, 100 R&B entries, and 20 number-one R&B singles.
During her career, she became the female artist with the most chart entries in Billboard history.
Aretha Franklin died on August 16, 2018 at the age of 76 due to complications from kidney failure and pancreatic cancer that she had suffered from for a long time. (*)
