He was an American singer-songwriter known for his deep, calm voice, backed by the distinctive sound of his backing band.
Much of Cash's music dealt with themes of sadness, moral woe, and redemption, especially songs from the later stages of his career.
Cash (his nickname), better known as Johnny Cash, wore his trademark all-black stage attire, which earned him the nickname "the Man in Black".
Born to cotton farmers in Kingsland, Arkansas, Cash grew up listening to gospel music and playing on the local radio station in high school.
After graduating from high school, Johnny Cash enlisted in the United States Air Force in July 1950 and was assigned to Germany as a Morse code operator.
He served four years in the Air Force, mostly in West Germany. He was honorably discharged from the Air Force in 1954.
After returning to the United States, he rose to prominence in the mid-1950s in the burgeoning rockabilly scene in Memphis, Tennessee.
Cash is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, having sold more than 90 million records worldwide.

Johnny Cash, who was active in singing from 1954–2003, died in Nashville, Tennessee, United States, on September 12, 2003 at the age of 71.
In his memory, Johnny Cash's life was made into a feature film and has been immortalized in the 2005 film Walk The Line.
George Jones
George Glenn Jones, better known as George Jones, was born in Saratoga, Texas, U.S., on September 12, 1931.
He is an American country musician, singer, and songwriter who achieved international fame thanks to a long list of hit songs and is known for his distinctive voice and phrases.
Before active as a singer and songwriter, George Jones had served in the United States Marine Corps and was discharged in 1953.
During the last two decades of his life, Jones was often referred to as the greatest living country singer, "The Rolls-Royce of Country Music".
During his musical career, he had over 160 charting singles to his name from 1955 to 2013.
Jones died in Nashville, Tennessee, U.S., on April 26, 2013, at the age of 81, due to hypoxic respiratory failure and was buried at Woodlawn Cemetery in Nashville.
In 2023, Rolling Stone ranked Jones 24th on their list of the 200 Greatest Singers of All Time.
